The program, a multifaceted event for a diversified community

Day 1: code/documentation sprints, training, commercial events
Day 2-4: back-to-back talks and BOF sessions
Day 5: code/documentation sprints

DAY 1: the warm-up

Activity 1: Code and documentation sprints

Code/documentation sprints get developers together for a set amount of time – usually one to two days – and just focus writing code or documentation. That's it. No explicit teaching, no sessions, just sharing knowledge, learning from the others as the day progresses and work towards a common goal.

Activity 2: Commercial training tracks

Close to a dozen experienced Drupal trainers offer 4 intense one-day commercial training tracks at 145 EUR per person. The fee includes attendance, training materials, drinks, lunch and Drupal book discounts.

Mostly all of proceeds go to the DrupalCon Scholarship Fund. By registering for a training you help bring more than 60 promising developers or students from developing nations to DrupalCon.

Activity 3: Commercial events

Acquia Partner Day: this event will provide an in-depth overview of the Acquia Partner program. If your organization designs, builds and/or implements Drupal solutions for your clients, then we encourage you to attend to learn more about how Acquia can work with you to grow the market for Drupal solution offerings.

DAY 2-4: the sessions

Track 1: From zero to hero

Learn what Drupal is all about, where to start and how to select and apply the right techniques and building blocks for your projects.

Track 2: Code it, test it, deploy it

Dive into the internals and learn what makes Drupal tick. Share ideas, approaches, pitfalls and possibilities. Take part in discussions and help shape Drupal 7 and beyond.

Track 3: Business development and Strategy

Is Drupal Enterprise Ready (TM)? Does it scale? Can it interconnect with legacy systems and, for that matter, will it still be around when web4.0 rules the world? How is the open source model economically viable and how does Drupal's GPL-based licensing model affect my organizational and commercial strategy?

Find out all this and more through a selection of showcases and war stories. Learn how, and why, organizations increasingly choose Drupal as a foundation for sustainable, industry-specific solutions.

Track 4: User Experience and design

Find out what all the D7 UX fuss is all about and why the effort spearheaded by Mark Boulton and Leisa Reichelt will be one of Drupal's most important milestones to date. Discuss the essence of user interaction and help bridge the gap between designers and developers.

A content management system (CMS) such as a document management system (DMS) is a computer application used to manage work flow needed to collaboratively create, edit, review, index, search, publish and archive various kinds of digital media and electronic text. CMS' are frequently used for storing, controlling, versioning, and publishing industry-specific documentation such as news articles, operators' manuals, technical manuals, sales guides, and marketing brochures. The content managed may include computer files, image media, audio files, video files, electronic documents, and Web content. These concepts represent integrated and interdependent layers. There are various nomenclatures known in this area: Web Content Management, Digital Asset Management, Digital Records Management, Electronic Content Management and so on. The bottom line for these systems is managing content and publishing, with a workflow if required.

Open source software

Open source software (OSS) is defined as computer software for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that meets the Open Source Definition or that is in the public domain. This permits users to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms. It is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. Open source software is the most prominent example of open source development and often compared to user-generated content. The term open source software originated as part of a marketing campaign for free software. A report by Standish Group states that adoption of open source software models has resulted in savings of about $60 billion per year to consumers.

Drupal project born in January 2001...

In 2000, permanent Internet connections were at a premium for University of Antwerp students, so Dries Buytaert and Hans Snijder set up a wireless bridge between their student dorms to share Hans's ADSL modem connection among eight students. While this was an extremely luxurious situation at that time, something was missing: There was no means to discuss or share simple things.

This inspired Dries to work on a small news site with a built-in web board, allowing the group of friends to leave each other notes about the status of the network, to announce where they were having dinner, or to share some noteworthy news items.

The software did not have a name until the day after Dries moved out after graduation. The group decided to put the internal website online so they could stay in touch, keep sharing interesting findings, and narrate snippets of their personal lives. While looking for a suitable domain name, Dries settled for 'drop.org' after he made a typo to see if the the name 'dorp.org' was still available. Dorp is the Dutch word for 'village', which was considered a fitting name for the small community.

Once drop.org was established on the Web, its audience changed as the members began talking about new web technologies, such as moderation, syndication, rating, and distributed authentication. Drop.org slowly turned into a personal experimentation environment, driven by the discussions and flow of ideas. The discussions about these web technologies were tried out on drop.org itself as new additions to the software running the site.

It was only later, in January 2001, that Dries decided to release the software behind drop.org as "Drupal." The purpose was to enable others to use and extend the experimentation platform so that more people could explore new paths for development. The name Drupal, pronounced "droo-puhl," derives from the English pronunciation of the Dutch word "druppel," which means "drop."
